Zeynep Tufekci


Turkish-born Zeynep Tufekci specialises in the impact of technology on business, society and culture. In her publications, the programmer discusses the influence of big data on politics and the role of privacy in the age of the Internet of Things. The techno-sociologist is a professor at the University of North Carolina and also lectures at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University.

In her keynote Zeynep Tufekci, specialises in the impact of technology on business, society and culture, showed the numerous ethical dilemmas resulted by the current business models of most of the biggest companies in the world. Nowadays, giant corporations and significant gatekeeper, collect our data and sell them for digital advertising reasons. Therefore, it is indispensable that technologist cure the negative outcome of technology. Tufekci focused on the new method, called machine learning, where every human gets profiled through the latest technology. “The method works as long as you have data”, stated Tufekci. Machine learning system is everywhere. Tufekci commented the method with an example “Youtube has no intention to push people to extreme stuff, they just want to keep them on one side and the only way to keep people on a certain side is to show them the most extreme stuff”.

To close her keynote, Tufekci made sure that the machine learning system has not only negative consequences but also positive ones.
